Hiring a nanny can be a great way to get the help you need to care for your children. However, setting and managing expectations with your nanny from the beginning is important. This is especially important if your nanny does not speak English as a first language.
Based on our concierge advisor experience, here are some tips for setting and managing expectations with a non-English-speaking nanny:
- Use clear and simple language. Be clear and concise in your communication. When you are speaking to your nanny, use simple language and avoid jargon. It is also helpful to use visual aids, such as pictures or gestures, to help your nanny understand what you are saying.
- Use a translator. If you are not fluent in your nanny's language, you may want to use a translator such as google translate or WeChat to help you communicate. This can be especially helpful when you are setting expectations for the first time.
- Use visual aids. If your nanny doesn't speak English very well, you can use visual aids to help communicate your expectations. For example, you could create a chart or poster with pictures of the tasks you expect your nanny to do.
- Write down your expectations. Once you have discussed your expectations with your nanny, it is a good idea to write them down. This will help to ensure that both of you are on the same page. Use an expectation guide such as this one.
- Be patient. It may take some time for your nanny to learn your language and understand your expectations. Be patient and understanding, and be sure to provide positive reinforcement when your nanny does something well.
Here are some specific expectations that you may want to discuss with your nanny:
- The nanny's duties and responsibilities. What will the nanny be responsible for doing? This may include things like taking care of the children, cleaning the house, or running errands.
- The nanny's schedule. What hours will the nanny work? What days will the nanny work?
- The nanny's pay. How much will the nanny be paid? When will the nanny be paid?
- The nanny's vacation and sick days. How many vacation days and sick days will the nanny be allowed?
- The nanny's communication style. How often will the nanny communicate with you? How will the nanny share with you?
Here are some additional tips for setting and managing expectations with a non-English-speaking nanny:
- Communicate your preferences: what is important to you and your family that can't be bent and require to be followed strictly.
- Use a translator who is familiar with childcare terminology. This will help to ensure that your translator can accurately convey your expectations to your nanny.
- Be aware of cultural differences. What are the cultural norms in your nanny's country? How do these norms affect childcare?
- Be flexible. Things don't always go according to plan, so be prepared to be flexible with your expectations.
